Seizures Included 2,000 Pieces of Adulterated Mattresses & Pillows
MCI inspection & control campaigns had raided the plants and warehouses using recycled and polluted sponge to make mattresses and pillows. Illegal labors used to collect discarded and polluted sponge from the waste and municipal dump and then they make the necessary upholstery on purpose of cheating and misleading the consumers. Consequently, the fourth plant using such polluted sponge was shut down by MCI in Jeddah. Nearly 2000 pieces of refurbished and discarded mattresses had been seized. Those responsible were summoned by MCI for investigation and taking the legal procedures against them.
During MCI inspection tours, the inspectors monitored two rest houses in Al Sanabil quarter, south Jeddah, which did not bear any external signs, therefore the two sites were raided by MCI inspectors with the collaboration of the security agencies in the province. MCI inspectors monitored polluted and recycled mattresses, and unregistered trademarks were placed on them, such as
"Sleep Jowhar" , "Pure Sleep," , "Bright Star" ,"Star Dream", and "Ehsan "which is considered a fraud and misleading to consumers. The seizure included 500 pieces of refurbished mattresses, ready for sale, and more than 1,500 pieces of old and discarded mattresses, in addition to four machines used for sewing and upholstery, as well as air compressor.
MCI had announced earlier the closure of a polluted sponge warehouse, south Jeddah. The labors used to collect discarded and polluted sponge to make mattresses, also they used to counterfeit anonymous trademarks on purpose of cheating and misleading the consumers, another sponge plant using the same discarded and polluted materials was shut down as well in Jeddah, while the third sponge plant was shut down in Riyadh for using polluted and recycled sponge, those responsible were summoned by MCI for investigation and taking the legal proceedings.
This comes within MCI on-going inspection tours on warehouses and commercial facilities, to verify their regular operation, and to eradicate the supply of counterfeit and substandard products in the market.
MCI will not hesitate to impose legal penalties on offenders and those involved in fraud and counterfeiting, and all that put the health and safety of consumers at risk.
